One of the most common types of elder abuse in New Jersey is financial abuse. Sadly, it is also one of the most harmful. Although financial abuse leaves no scars, it can cause tremendous psychological hardship, including shame and anger. Its effects also ripple throughout families, impacting numerous generations and robbing them of wealth. In order to avoid financial abuse effectively in New Jersey, families must be aware of most modern techniques scam artists are using today.
Scam Artist Found with $360,000 in Cash at Her Home in Galloway
On July 18, it was reported that a scam artist’s home had been searched in Galloway. Police subsequently found $360,000 in cash. This money was taken from various scam victims, including senior citizens. In fact, the scam artist later admitted that she specifically targeted senior citizens in New Jersey. She was charged with deception and money laundering. As it turned out, seniors from across the entire nation had been sending cash to the scammer’s home. At least one elderly victim sent her an undisclosed sum of cash from Texas.
Seniors Targeted With “Pigeon Drop” Scams in New Jersey
On July 26, it was reported that an elderly construction worker had been scammed out of $10,000 in Paramus. The victim was walking near Bergen Town Center when he was approached by a scam artist. This individual claimed that he had found a bag containing $185,000 cash. The pair were then approached by a third individual, who was secretly in on the scam but acted as if they were a stranger. The third individual apparently won the victim’s trust, and the two scammers convinced the construction worker that he should hold onto the cash.
In exchange for holding onto the cash, the construction worker agreed to provide the two individuals with $10,000. After receiving this money, the scammers took off with the money. The construction worker was then left with the bag of money, which turned out to contain worthless paper. This is known as a “pigeon drop” scam, and it is one of the oldest schemes around. Despite this, the scam is still very common across New Jersey, and at least one other individual in the Garden State was recently arrested for targeting seniors in this manner.
